OBJECTIVE

Low-maintenance perennial grass cover

In 2013, Flora Victoria was engaged to sow 4.5 hectares of new parkland at Gordon O’Keeffe Reserve in Wyndham. The primary aim was to establish a perennial grass cover that would prevent the turf areas from turning into dust bowls during the dry summer months typical of this low rainfall region.

A locally sourced Wallaby Grass mix was sown. Unlike many revegetation sites, this project faced minimal competition from grassy weeds, with only a few broadleaf species and isolated invasive grasses needing control. This made the goal of establishing a stable native grass cover far more achievable.

Today, the site still holds a strong cover of Wallaby Grass. While it naturally browns off in summer, it continues to protect the soil and revives well with seasonal moisture, maintaining good appearance throughout most of the year — all without irrigation.
